University’s Pay Practice for Employees Required to Work on July 4th, and Reminder of Remaining University Holidays for 2016

The University will be closed Monday, July 4th in observance of Independence Day, we want to remind employees and supervisors of the University’s pay practice regarding non-exempt employees who are required to work during a University holiday.  Benefit eligible employees in non-exempt positions who are required by their supervisors to work on a holiday have a choice, in addition to regular holiday pay, of time-and-one-half pay or time off at a time-and-one half rate for hours worked, to be taken within the same pay period.  Based on staffing needs, a department may require pay rather than time off.  Part-time, Temporary, On-Call and Seasonal, non-exempt employees who work on a holiday will receive time-and-one-half pay.  Exempt employees who are required by their supervisor to work on a holiday may take another day off during that calendar year.
For future reference, this policy is in the Employee Handbook on the HR website at  http://www.wlu.edu/document/employee-handbook.
Listed below is how this time should be recorded in WebAdvisor for non-exempt employees.
Record actual hours worked under “Regular Hours” and under “Shift Hours” and select “Time & Half- Univ. Holiday” under “Shift Type.” If you did not work a full day, the difference of actual hours worked and your regular scheduled hours should be recorded under “Other Time Hours” with “Other Time Type” of “Univ. Holidays/Closings.”
If you have any questions, please contact Wanda Scott, wrscott@wlu.edu, Les Gearhart, lgearhart@wlu.edu or Carolyn Deacon, cdeacon@wlu.edu.
