From time to time, employees come in for a refresher on the many benefits and perks provided by the university, to see if there are any benefits they want but aren’t yet enrolled in, to check their beneficiaries on life insurance and to see what their net pay would be if they contribute more to their retirement account with Fidelity or TIAA/CREF. If you’re interested in a “benefits check-up,” call or email me and we’ll arrange a convenient time for you to stop by.
The following topics were discussed in open enrollment meetings on May 8 and 9. As promised, here are answers to the good questions and topics that were mentioned:
Removal of Wisdom Teeth
As disclosed in the open enrollment newsletter, Anthem will no longer cover the removal of wisdom teeth effective June 30. We have confirmed that this procedure is covered under the UCCI Dental Buy-Up Plan at 50%. Please note that you must be enrolled in the Buy-Up Plan for a full year before you receive the major services coverage at 50%. If you would like to switch from the Core to Buy-Up plan, an enrollment form is necessary by May 31.
Urgent Care Centers
When Anthem processes the claim from the urgent care site (or any practice), Anthem determines the co-pay amount based on the physician’s specialty that is on their provider database for the rendering physician reported on the claim. If the rendering physician is an emergency medicine specialty, Anthem applies the specialist co-pay, if the rendering physician is a family practice specialty Anthem applies the PCP co-pay. If the provider does not collect the correct co-pay, then they may either owe the patient a refund or they may have to collect more after the claim processes.
Many of the urgent care sites employ both emergency medicine physicians and family practice physicians. So co-pay may vary depending on which physician the member sees.
It was also mentioned during one of the informational sessions that Carilion/Stonewall Jackson Hospital has a “Fast Track” in the ER. We followed up with Carilion to determine whether it qualified as an urgent care center with a lower co-pay. We learned that “Fast Track” may help with quicker service but the copay is still an ER copay. Additional information is on Carilion’s website at http://www.carilionclinic.org/csjh/emergency-services.
Flexible Spending Accounts
There was a question on mileage reimbursement. Mileage or fares related specifically to an eligible medical visit to and from healthcare providers, hospitals and pharmacies is an eligible medical FSA expense. Effective January 1, 2013 and until further IRS notice, the standard mileage rate for the use of a car (also vans, pickups or panel trucks), is $.24 per mile. Actual fares for buses, taxis, trains and subways are reimbursable for the full cost. To be reimbursed, submit an itemized statement showing date of service for each trip.
Data Security and Confidentiality – Live Well Program
Since questions about the security of the information contained in the LiveWell program continue to arise from time to time, we thought it would be useful to provide this link to an earlier post on this subject.
Our wellness program vendor is bound by the same federal law (HIPAA) that protects individuals’ health information. Your individual information is not shared with W&L or with Anthem and W&L only receives aggregate information including data on the number of participants and on the health risks that are present in our population.
The LiveWell program is entirely voluntary, but we hope concerns about privacy will not deter you from participating and receiving the health and monetary rewards!
As a reminder, the deadline to make changes to your benefits for the 2013/2014 year is this Friday, May 31. To enroll or re-enroll in flexible spending accounts, enrollment forms are needed by June 14.
As always, please let me know if you have any questions.

Because of our switch in carriers for our basic and supplemental life insurance, all benefit eligible employees (regardless of enrollment in the insurance products), now have access to three services through Cigna that we believe you will find beneficial. These free services include:
Will Preparation Program. Similar to a product like TurboTax, you can go to CIGNAWillCenter.com and start building your will and other legal documents.
Identity Theft Program. You will work with a personal case manager who will help you work through critical identity theft issues you may encounter.
Programs and services to enhance your health and wellness. From acupuncture to natural supplements, this program provides discounts on health programs and services.
To review an informational sheet for each of these three programs, visit our website at http://www.wlu.edu/x11368.xml.
