Directions: from Lexington, drive to the end of Ross Road (2.3 miles from the city limits) and turn right on Union Run Road. Continue 0.6 miles to the Brushy Hills Trails sign and Town Spring, a low stone building on the right.

Summer research opportunity

Professor Robert Humston is looking for two students who are interested in assisting with his research in fisheries ecology this summer. The goal is to collect tissue samples from smallmouth bass in the tributaries of the middle James River. He will extract DNA from these samples and send them out for further analyses. Field work will include extensive canoeing / kayaking and fish collection (electrofishing as well as hook-and-line). Competence in the field and on the water and some fishing experience are required. Laboratory experience is also desirable. He needs up to two reliable and resourceful people that he can trust to safely navigate these rivers and catch fish. Are you interested in a pilgrimage to Glacier National Park, Redwood National Park, the Barrier Islands, or some other wild and spirit-stimulating landscape? Other W & L students have journeyed to such locations and brought back their discoveries to share. You can be next!
Any non-graduating W & L student interested in applying to the S. Bryant Kendrick Memorial Outdoor Fund for project assistance should submit the following materials to the Kendrick Committee c/o Prof. Jim Warren,, by midnight on March 31, 2013:
1. A description of the project, including time-frame and travel budget.
2. A one-paragraph statement about why you want to pursue this project.
3. A supporting letter from a faculty member with whom you have discussed the project.
4. A personal vita.
5. Agreement to undergo an interview if requested.
Past awards have ranged up to $800 to defray project expenses.
*The Kendrick Fund was established in memory of S. Bryant Kendrick (’67) to provide financial support for one or more students to have an extramural experience of self-examination and reflection through exploration of the natural world. Recipients are to record their experiences in an artful way and present them at W & L the following year.*

Virginia State Parks Youth Conservation Corps – Hiring!

The VSPYCC is hiring Supervisors for our 2013 program. For serving 3 weeks in State Parks supervising youth, Supervisors receive a $1,800 stipend along with a set $350 travel stipend, for a total of $2150.

Fly Fishing Film Tour

The Fly Fishing Film Tour is coming to Lexington THIS MONDAY, February 11!

It is a night of fly fishing filmography you won’t soon forget.  Massive hatches, jungle adventures, and of course outsize fish are just a part of the eye candy.  All of these films are beautifully shot and arranged and are guaranteed to take the edge of the winter cabin fever, and get you primed for the soon-to-come spring fishing!!

Snowshoe Mtn. ski trips this weekend

Up for a little adventure? Outdoor Adventure Trip Leader – Apogee Adventures

Throughout American West, Northeast, Caribbean & Europe
Organization Overview:
Apogee offers outdoor adventure travel to students between the ages of 12-18. Activities include: bicycle touring, hiking & backpacking, community service, sea kayaking, surfing, & rafting. Focus is on building confidence, character and community- mindedness through adventure travel and service.
Leader Qualifications:
· Age 20 or older by June 2013
· Highly responsible, motivated, adaptable and hard working
· Prior positive leadership experience
· Prior positive experience working with young people
· Eager to work and live simply and responsibly in the outdoors
· Fit and healthy
· Fun, positive, adventurous, and an outstanding role model
· Minimum Certification Requirements: will depend on trip and may be obtained post-hiring – CPR, First Aid, Wilderness First Aid/Responder
Trip leader pairs (always one male, one female) are responsible for safety and well- being of up to 12 students in outdoor adventure travel setting. Leaders must serve as excellent role models as they foster teamwork and a healthy, nurturing group dynamic. They must create an atmosphere that is safe and welcoming, and bring out the best in each student.
2013 Dates of Employment:
June 17 through early/mid August (depending on trip assignment).

OC Ski Trip this weekend

Beginner Ski trip to Homestead this Saturday.  Depart at 8am return after 4pm.  Cost is $59.00 and  includes rentals, lift ticket and lesson.  Bring water and a lunch or cash for food while you are there. Not a skier?  Go ice skating or tubing  instead.  Register online.

Bring the Blue Bikes Back!

We hope you have benefited from the Blue Bike Program on campus this fall.  Please ‘ride and return’ before you leave for home.  If anybody sees a Blue Bike or knows of the location of one please email or return to any campus bike rack so we can repair them and get back on campus for Winter Term 2013.
Additional Blue Bikes will be available for checkout during the Winter Term from the Leyburn Library.
